Da Ma Cai brings hope and joy for Sweet Care Welfare Society

Selangor, 14 November 2017

The holiday season is here and the joy of this delightful and celebratory time is also time for year-end giving and sharing campaigns. To align with the campaign that promotes a time to be thankful and giving back to those in needs, Da Ma Cai through its Staff-In-The-Community (SITC) program contributed cash aid to Sweet Care Welfare Society (SCWS).

Established in 1999 by Madam Thanam Krishnan, SCWS is a non-profit charitable organisation that shelters underprivileged children, adolescents and senior citizens. It is located in Taman Bidara, Selayang. Nestled in the old residential cul-de-sac, the front of the home is a small community playground, while the busy Selayang-Kepong Highway lies adjacent to the back.

SCWS’s aim is to help its residents to maximize their full potential, and achieve an independent and fulfilled life. The home also assists struggling single mothers to regain control of their life. The home currently has 13 senior citizens, 5 single mothers, 8 teenagers, as well as 74 children among which 3 are physically challenged.

During the short visit at SCWS premise, Da Ma Cai volunteers began with engaging the children in light activities while a catering team put out delicious food of the celebration feast. It was not long before growling stomachs sings for lunch. Eager and hungry children queue up orderly as the volunteers serve the food to them. In the spirit of giving and sharing, RM7,000 cash vouchers were handed to the home’s Caretaker Thanam Krishnan to purchase groceries, school uniforms and stationeries for the children.

With so many children under one roof, the single storey corner terrace house had been extended, in order to put in sufficient bunk beds in each room for the children to sleep on. Mattresses were laid out on the floor where beds are not available.

“The end of the year is one of the most crucial times for almost every non-profit organisation, as we usually receive a majority of our annual donations from October through December. But this year, we are experiencing lesser contributions, and at the same time, facing increased demand for our services. During this trying time, we are striving and hope to raise more money than any year before,” said Ms Thanam.

“We do hope that our little act will serve to inspire our community to get involve and contribute to the underprivileged,” Da Ma Cai spokesperson added.

On an annual basis, Da Ma Cai actively supports various causes in the areas of education, social welfare and public health through a wide range of programmes and activities carried out in the country. Following the acquisition of PMP by Jana Pendidikan Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. (JPM), all of PMP’s net dividends that JPM receives will be donated to The Community Chest. With this structure, Da Ma Cai has effectively been transformed from a for-profit organisation into a social business, providing long term donations to The Community Chest for the benefit of the Malaysian community.
